Mrs Millar's Blog June 2022Posted on 6th Jun 2022
Firstly, I hope everyone had a good half term break and enjoyed the long bank holiday weekend. I apologise that this letter has come after the holidays rather than before, but we were recruiting staff for next year up to and including the last day of term, and I wanted to be in a position to provide an update on this as well as a review of the half term.
Last half term very much felt like the first ‘normal’ period since covid, with the return of in school events, theatre trips and numerous sporting fixtures. We were pleased to welcome back our local MP Dr Dan Poulter who spoke with year 9 and took numerous questions from them. Following this we were delighted to be asked to host the Secretary of State for Education, Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP for a Headteacher question and answer session. He was very complimentary of the school and our wider Trust.
It was lovely to see students back to visiting the theatre with the English department and to see the minibus going off full of smiling faces for sporting fixtures!
Year 10 have been involved in the recruitment process for Head Students for next year. Following an interview, speech, application form and voting by staff and students I was delighted that Maryellen Ward has been appointed Head Student with Wiktoria Kosla and Phoebe Nunn the Deputies. Other positions such as senior prefect, sports captains and form captains have also been appointed. I look forward to seeing the students develop in these roles.
The year 11’s are well into their final GCSE examinations. They have been really positive in their approach, and I know they will get the results they deserve come the summer.
This time of year also brings around staff changes for next year.
Mrs Elliott, Deputy Headteacher is leaving us having been promoted to Headteacher at Old Buckenham High School. She has been an incredible asset to the school, and we will miss her greatly, but are delighted to welcome Mr Hibbert as her replacement from September.
Mrs Simmonds-Mead has wanted to train as an Art Therapist for a number of years, but covid got in the way of her plans. We wish her well with her training and thank her for all her hard work and commitment over the years. She will be replaced by Ms Nield.
Dr Giles has only been with us a short time but has decided to retire. We wish him well for the future. He will be replaced by Mr Birtchnell.
Ms Vermorel was off long term sick this year and we have been very grateful to Mrs Spears for increasing her teaching commitment and Ms Di Prata who came to cover this year. Mrs Spears will now return to her part time role and will be joined by a new Head of Department for MFL in Mrs Henwood and another part time teacher in Ms Alas.
This is another busy term, with sports day, Duke of Edinburgh Award practise and formal expeditions, the year 10 end of year exams and activities day on our final day Wednesday 20th July. I know this will be a fun and uplifting end to another challenging year.
