PSHEe at Stradbroke High School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

 

Our Aims

To enable our pupils to become:

Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and know that they can achieve

  • Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • Responsible citizens who can make a positive contribution to society

 

The Ethos

Our PSHEe is based around speaking and listening skills with most lessons involving discussion.  We also use a variety of video clips which provide both factual information and the opportunity for students’ to develop empathy with individuals in different situations outside of their own experience.

 

A significant thread running through our units of work is that of aspiration.  We aim to raise the aspirations of every student so that they can achieve their potential both academically and socially and will be confident as they take their place in the wider world.

 

We also focus on risk to help our students see risk in both positive and negative terms and understand that individuals need to manage risk to themselves and others in a range of situations.

We hold at least one whole school PSHE morning each year which has covered a variety of topics such as Internet Safety, Equality and Diversity, British Values, Bullying and so on.  These are organised in tutor groups with all staff involved in the discussions with students.


This code of conduct was put together following one such morning and is now displayed around the school:

The lessons

Every student in Year 7, 8 and 10 has a lesson of PSHEe each fortnight (100 minute lessons). The subject is delivered through timetabled lessons, extracurricular activities, Student Council, and there are both trips and visits being planned for 2014/15 as part of our cultural awareness and the Citizenship aspects of the curriculum.  Year 9 PSHE is covered in some dedicated morning lessons on the topics of Careers and Sex and Relationships Education.  Year 11 cover some key areas of relationships and Citizenship in RE lessons or Core RE/PSHE lessons depending on their options.

 

Lessons are based around the QCA Programmes of non-statutory study for Key Stage 3 and 4.  These incorporate both personal and financial wellbeing of our students.  In this way, we feel that our PSHEe programme will help to equip every pupil to enjoy and achieve both here at Stradbroke and throughout their lives.  We focus on the social and emotional aspects of learning such as self awareness, managing feelings, motivation, empathy and social skills.  We also look out to the wider world with some units of Citizenship in both Key Stage 3 a for example covering human rights and mental health.

 

Sex and Relationships

We deliver Sex and Relationships education to each pupil in every year of Key Stage 3.  In these units of work we aim to develop confident, assertive individuals who can build successful relationships and keep themselves safe.  In Year 9, this is delivered in a focused off-timetable lesson.

 

Each student will have a folder to keep throughout their school career and in it they will keep important work or information.  Within their folder, each student will also have a Personal Record Checklist that will be completed after each sex and relationships unit.  This means we can check that every pupil has received these important lessons.

 

In Key Stage 4 careers education is covered through individual interviews that each student has with our careers co-ordinator.  We also arrange university trips and have had ex-students in to speak to the students.

Other PSHE related issues such as abortion, marriage, contraception and Citizenship issues such as Human Rights, Voting, Crime and Punishment are covered within the Philosophy, Religion and Ethics curriculum which all Key Stage 4 students are following.

Reflection and Feedback

After each unit of work, every pupil will fill in a self assessment sheet where they can record the most important things they have learnt.  They can also comment on what they have enjoyed or not enjoyed and note down any questions they still might have.  This provides time for our pupils to reflect on their learning and gives us vital feedback to inform our future plans.

Sion Hill

On Thursday 14 September we had the Irish Singer-Songwriter Sion Hill come to our school to sing and talk about online safety and Cyber bullying.  He performed to Years 7, 8 and 9 and everyone really enjoyed his music and appreciated the important message he gave about staying safe online and how to find help if any issues arise.

International Week

On the last week of the Spring Term we held an international week where we focused on life beyond Suffolk.  We undertook a wide range of activities as a whole school including each tutor group learning how to say simple greetings and numbers in different languages.

Whole school PSHE session on Diversity and British Values

On Thursday 3rd November we held an extended tutor time and the whole school was involved in a discussion game on diversity, equality and British values.
