Today, with help from the Smallpeice Trust (spelt correctly-honest!) year 9 pupils enhanced their understanding of problem solving, creativity, design and engineering. Working together in small groups they were teams of engineers working on an island facing drought. They had to create a wind turbine, with a tower, turbine and gearing system connected to a generator to produce electricity. The winning team was the one which built the turbine which when tested with a voltmeter produced the…Continue

It was great to welcome so many families of primary school pupils into the maths department on Open Evening: the theme of GCSE formulae in M1 proved very popular with lots of parents trying to remember what they knew in the dim and distant past and also explaining how they use them every day in construction, aviation and engineering.…Continue

Welcome to the maths team!
Mrs Sally Clarke - Head of Mathematics and Business and Director of Enterprise
Mrs Claire Witmore - Assistant Head of House and Maths Teacher
Mr Andrew Taylor - Head of House and Maths and P.E. Teacher
Mrs Helen Ball - Maths Teacher
Everyone can understand maths!
As a department, we are committed to helping all our pupils develop Growth Mindsets; the belief that all pupils are capable of achieving and that their ability in mathematics is not fixed but can be grown.
Around the school and in maths classrooms particularly, there is evidence of how having a Growth rather than a Fixed Mindset enables our pupils to make excellent progress and we have plenty of stunning examples of pupils who have persevered, engaged a 'can do' attitude and have achieved more than they thought they ever could!
At KS4 our pupils study Edexcel Mathematics examinations and we studying the new GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics (1MA1) which was certificated for the first time in June 2017.
We rely on the use of our dedicated computer suites for a clear and accessible bank of exercises, problem solving challenges and videos.
Our pupils also benefit from Mymaths: an online mathematics learning tool with lessons in each topic they need to learn - plus homework which is instantly marked and feedback given (so there is plenty of chance for pupils to try again and understand even more!)
Plus, our pupils each have their own SAM Learning account where homework practice is posted...or they can just use it for fun to challenge each other.
In addition, our specialist mathematicians provide lunchtime clinics, Aim Higher sessions and up to date access to website materials which pupils benefit from using for revision all through the year and parents and carers find addictive for updating their own knowledge.
