ICT and Computing

In key stage 3, the exciting and ever innovating aspects of computing and ICT are taught within mathematics lessons in readiness for pupils to expand their knowledge in preparation for the world of further education and work.  Using either ICT Suite 1 or 2 or the Business Suite, all installed with stand alone P.C.s following our £1m cabling upgrade in 2015, pupils benefit from quick and effective internet access and learning software applications.

In addition to project based active learning, pupils study with ICT Workout.co.uk which allows them access to 670 interactive tasks to suit all types of learner and ensure they embed their learning across the following key concepts:

  1. Computer Systems
  2. The Internet
  3. Programming
  4. Sensors & Control
  5. Social Aspects of ICT
  6. Application Software

Pupils also have the opportunity to attend Code Club sessions in which they learn how to code and write programmes in Python using Raspberry Pi.  By being able to control Minecraft and incorporate their own sound effects into Minecraft using Sonic Pi, pupils gain an excellent introduction to the disciplines involved in writing code.

In year 10 pupils can begin to study the two year Cambridge National Qualification in ICT.

This is a vocationally-related qualification that takes an engaging, practical and inspiring approach to learning and assessment. The everyday use of ICT, from PCs to smartphones, now impacts all of our lives. The Cambridge National in ICT reflects this and provides students with a solid understanding of the subject which they can use in their working lives. Three themes are covered: business information systems, creative and technical covered by the following topics:

R001: Understanding computer systems

R002: Using ICT to create business  solutions

R004: Handling data using  databases

R005: Creating an interactive product using multi-media components

Remember these?...

R001 is the only component of the course which is assessed by an hour long

written examination. The other topics are teacher assessed projects and units

of work which are developed throughout the two years.
