The Cold War and the making of the modern world

What are conspiracy theories?

Key stage 4

At Key Stage 4 the school follows the AQA History A specification which includes controlled assessment. Unit 1, which is followed in Year 10, is thematic study of the History of Medicine and Health through time.  Beginning at 20,000bc, students trace the key developments and attitudes that bring us to our modern understanding of the human body and its health.

The controlled assessment is a local study of Framlingham Castle. We look specifically at the years spanning 1066-1524, when the castle was built, developed and squabbled over by the powerful Bigod family and a variety of medieval kings (including John, who rides to seige Framlingham Castle in 1216).  Eventually the castle ends up in the hands of the powerful Howard family, who's tombs can be visited in Framlingham church.  This study, resulting in two 1,000 word essays, gives students a unique chance to study their local history in depth.

Unit 2 is studied in Year 11 after the completion of the Controlled Assessment. A much more in depth paper, the course is a study of the American West 1840-1895.  Students gain an understanding of the settlement and development of the USA, thus giving them an insight into the attitudes and history of the country that can be considered the world's greatest superpower.

An equal society?

Year 9 have begun a new investigation into the Civil Rights movement of the 20th Century by comparing life in the USA with life in Nazi Germany in 1939. We have started by thinking about Jesse Owen's experiences at the 1939 Berlin Olympics, where he was able to dine and stay with his white team-mates, and making a comparison with his life at home in the USA, where he couldn't do either of these things!
