An 11-16 Academy
Welcome to the English department whose students, this summer, achieved over 87%, grades 4 and above, in English. We strongly believe that our success is a result of our determination and passion in ensuring that everyone achieves their potential. Every year we strive to improve upon last year's results by looking for new and exciting ways to deliver your lessons so that you are left with a love for reading and writing as well as feeling confident about what English Language and English Literature entails.
The study of English should give you the opportunity for individual thought, improved communication skills and a chance to share your ideas in a safe and supportive environment.
You will have the opportunity to produce your own writing whilst learning how to draft, edit, improve and present your work to the highest possible standard. Through the reading and study of texts, you will be encouraged to develop your own responses to language and literature, to advance your understanding of how writers use words and to evaluate the contextual factors associated with any play or text studied.
As part of our schemes of work, the key skills of: spelling, grammar and punctuation are taught in the Key Stage 3 and revised at KS4. The new GCSE English Language and English Literature places significant emphasis on these skills so it is important that you understand the need to plan and check your work carefully.
Most of our lessons demand you to actively participate, as much as possible, as we strongly believe that the more you communicate in lesson, the better your academic writing will become.
We also run a range of educational visits to local or London Theatres, throughout the year, to enrich your understanding of some the key plays that we study at Stradbroke.
