GCSE Business Studies

Real Life Business Environment

By making Business Studies all about real life examples and engaging pupils in the world and issues around them, the Business Studies department is very pleased to consistently achieve top ranking grades in June every year.
During the two year Edexcel GCSE Business Studies course, pupils are treated as company directors and often work in groups to develop presentations, pitches and considered debates pertaining to the financial, moral, social and cultural aspects of the subject - just as it applies in every day life. Pupils enjoy reading newspaper articles, researching current affairs and developing their own, alternative solutions to business issues facing local, national and international markets as they develop.
Y10 and Y11 Mrs Clarke
Assessment and course content:
The new specification, 1BS0, which is being examined for the first time in 2019, has a wider and more commercially relevant content as described below:
  • Increased breadth and depth to cover:
    • e-commerce and digital communication
    • the sales process and the importance to businesses of providing good customer service, including product knowledge, customer engagement and post sales service
    • the role of procurement and the impact of logistical and supply decisions on businesses
    • gross and net profit ratios, break even and average rate of return
  • Increased depth:
    • through application to business contexts (small to large businesses operating in local, national and global markets)
    • through business decision making
  • Increased emphasis on the interrelated nature of business activity

  • The economic environment is included but there is minimal overlap with economics subject content

Assessment of the new (9-1) 2017 GCSE is different from the legacy course and includes:

  • Removal of controlled assessment; the GCSEs in Business will now be assessed entirely by exam
  • Introduction of quantitative skills (calculation and interpretation) with a minimum of 10% of the subject marks to be allocated to these skills

Assessment Y11 in 2017/8  only ( Edexcel legacy A*- G specification):
  • Controlled Assessment for completion by Christmas in year 11
  • Two Written examinations at the end of year 11:
  1. 5BSO1 Multiple choice and objective test questions - 45 minutes
  2. 5BSO2 Written examination - 1 hour and 30 minutes
The Edexcel Business Studies GCSE covers 3 Units over two years:
Unit 1 Introduction to Small Business
Unit 2 Investigating Small Business
Unit 3 Growing a Business
Unit 1 is worth 25% of the total GCSE and was covered in Year 10 - it  features:

Unit 3 is worth 50% of the total GCSE and is covered in the rest of Year 11 - it  features:

  • marketing
  • meeting customer needs
